ACCESS Magazine- Gamification

As you can probably guess the brief for this work was right up my street, there are many key references in this illustration which relate to the article, such as:

- Referring to the game Zelda - “in which the player has to take the quest and break it down into smaller chunks”

- Reference to a curriculum in a school in New York where “The children learn by ‘becoming’ writers, explorers or mathematicians and fully take on that role” hence the macho kid.

- The man in the boat with a bow and arrow refers to this phrase “If you can find some way of giving your washing up epic meaning then it becomes very exciting”

And so on, check out TCOL’s beautiful design work here, Good fun! And you can find the magazine out and about for free in select stores across the UK.

ACCESS Magazine - Editorial

I was asked by The Church of London design team to produce a couple of illustrations for the new issue of Playstation’s ACCESS magazine last month. I was excited to see that the content of the article was really interesting and it brought back some great childhood memories.

This was the second smaller illustration I worked on with them and the Illo above is a bigger, more detailed piece of work. The article referenced people needing to bring computer game strategies into their every day lives in order to be productive. So here I mixed the mundane task of sweeping up, with gaining a high score and being a prize winner!

Cincinnati Magazine - Editorial

Mountain Biking

Here’s a spot illustration I produced last month for the April issue of Cincinnati Magazine. The article was about volunteers that are helping to build a mountain bike trail through the woods in Cincinnati. A small, straight forward but nonetheless interesting piece to work on.

Cincinnati Magazine - Editorials

Attracting Stairs

This is a full page editorial for the March issue of the magazine, I’ve altered this particular version for my portfolio as in the magazine the typography and clouds were a little bigger, but I preferred it this way.

The article’s about a church in Cincinnati where people gather upon the stairs beneath and pray to God. The clouds below this church contain religious phrases with a humorous twist.

Usbek and Rica - Editorial

This mega robot journalist is featured in the second issue of Usbek & Rica, which is a beautifully curated French magazine designed by Anna and Charles of Almasty

The article’s about robots taking over journalism jobs in the future, so in this illustration an intelligent, shiny, robot dude has won the Pulitzer prize for his brilliant writing skills!

Behind Illustrations - Publication

I’m really happy to be a part of this new book by Index Book who are great publishing company based in Barcelona and have recently also published Peepshow Collectives new book.

I’ve got a 6 page feature in the publication along with an interview and I was also pleasantly surprised to see my ‘Preseved’ piece as the first preview spread on the shop site, exciting!

See more inside and go buy the book here!

Daft as a Brush

This piece of work was produced for a show titled ‘A Bakers Dozen’ beginning tonight at Ted Baker’s Meatpacking store in New York. It is part of a show of 13 artworks by a roster of international YCN illustrators with the theme of typically British phrases such as ‘Gift of the Gab’ and ‘Keen as Mustard’.

I was briefed with the phrase ‘Daft as a Brush’ and it took me a while to reach this conclusion. The depth behind the British phrase is that chimney sweepers (known here in the expression as the brushes) often used to fall down chimneys and hit their heads, thus making them stupid. So I aimed to capture the 19th Century household but in a brush form.

Read more about the show and see the event poster here on the YCN blog. The exhibition runs on until May 23rd 2012.

PLANSPONSOR - Editorial

Here’s a simple editorial I worked on for the April issue of PLANSPONSOR magazine, which is jam packed full of talented illustrators and I’m pleased to be amongst such good company.

The article itself was based around finding new ways to approach investing whilst keeping risk away, so I decided to throw in a couple of lions amongst the madness.

More new stuff to come this week.

The Muted Minute Before Disperse

Tonight (April 13th) is the night of the show at iam8bit gallery and here is my contribution to the group exhibition based upon time travel. I wanted to do a series of these people with strange time machines but I unfortunately had other deadlines looming over head so I didn’t get chance. I’ll also be selling a limited edition run of these prints over summer when I’m back in the UK.

Time Travel-themed group art exhibition

I’m exhibiting a new piece of work as part of this Group exhibition at iam8bit gallery in LA starting this Friday 13th till 29th April.

The show hosts 40 different artists from all over the world and also coincides with the release of a new book entitled ‘So You Created a Wormhole: The Time Traveler’s Guide to Time Travel’ by Mr. Phil Hornshaw & Mr. Nick Hurwitch. What an awesome theme for a show, if you are lucky enough to live in LA you should totally go!

Channel 4 Online

This piece of work is being printed at A0 for the Channel 4 HQ and is the biggest, most time consuming piece of work I have ever produced. Rocking in at a MIGHTY 2000 layers!!!

So… in this image the Channel 4 Online team are displayed as a busy city with four separate harbors and a business management team, which is represented by the tall central building. All harbors are outputting new products and TV shows to the audience which is shown by the surrounding residential area at the top of the image. Also amongst the island are a number of race cars that represent exactly which departments collaborate with which.

It feels great but also very strange to finally be able to release these posters into the wild after I have been working on them for almost three months now, with lots of back and forth tweaking bits and bobs and adding minor details…phew it’s over and here it is, I hope you like it!

Channel 4 Online - Crops

Here’s a closer look into the detail on the poster.

Amongst the madness you can see some dolphins diving alongside a surfer, a lighthouse which is searching out for undiscovered talent, a busy city and a jet skier jumping through a hoop of fire (inspired by the man Kenny Powers)

Channel 4 - Product Management

This poster focuses on one of the departments that works within the Channel 4 building, thus being the Product Team. The image itself acts as a metaphor; the product team functions like a cog within a bigger mechanism, and in order for it to work successfully they need a collaborative input from all surrounding departments.

Channel 4 - Product Management - (Crops)

In November I was commissioned to produce two infographic posters for the Channel 4 headquarters. They were art directed by the great guys over at INT Works (previously New Studio London)

Here are three crops so you can get a closer look into the detail on the poster.
